THE DATE WAS SATURDAY, APRIL 15, 2017
THE PLACE WAS at the Pole Green Park, Mechanicsville
IT WAS A GREAT DAY FOR RECOGNIZING OUR K-9 HEROES - PAST AND PRESENT
AND ALL CANINE LOVERS THROUGHOUT HANOVER AND BEYOND
Your Hanover Hounds K-9 Search and Rescue Team and The Pooch Pursuit sponsored by the Friend of Hanover Dog Parks along with a fantastic job by Hanover County Department of Parks and Recreation, this annual family-friendly event honored the contributions of the heroic dogs who have served side-by-side with their human companions on the battlefield in time of war and also at home, assisting police and law enforcement, performing search and rescue missions, and providing companionship to our wounded warriors. Along with other various K9 units from around the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Hanover Hounds performed and demonstrated to the largest crowd ever for this event, the capabilities of a working canine. There were lots of games and fun, and a chance to see how fast you and your canine are as a team during Pooch Pursuit. The event included the first ever Canine Easter Egg Hunt, and the established game of seeing which canine can eat ice cream the fastest.
Do you know the history behind K-9 Veterans Day? Do you realize that one month after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, in January of 1942, a group of dog-minded individuals established the "Dogs for Defense."
Ed Martin, our heavenly brother and friend, this event was for you!
Enjoy the slide presentation below, to witness the thrills and excitement that all Hanover Hounds experienced, and we cannot wait until next year. To everyone who donated, we thank you for your generous support.

The cost of $8.00 per shot was widely received by all participants, and comments about the smoothness of he operation were noted by the Hanover Hounds many staff people present. Several applications were handed out, and we wish anyone interested in joining us, or just speaking to our membership committee, e-mail membership@hanoverhounds.com.

LET'S CONGRATULATE AND THANK THE WORKING K-9
On Saturday morning at the Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, VA. on April 16, 2016, friends of all canines gathered to hold the Annual Pooch Pursuit and celebrate the Working K-9 at the Annual Hanover Heroes Day event. Whether it be military service canines, security canines, Homeland Security animals, trailing and tracking k-9s or Human Remains Detection animals. they were thanked by a great crowd of well wishers. In the crowd was about every type and size of canine, who, along with their owners stood tall and proud to be at this event. The Hanover Hounds K-9 Search and Rescue Team who were the founders of the original Hanover Hound Days were all present and could not be missed in the Bright Neon Yellow uniforms. The Hounds thank those units participating in the event - The Capital Police, Richmond Police and Hanover County Sheriff's Office. The canine unit from Fort Lee was missed as all canines from that unit have been deployed overseas. We all wish them well.

CANINE VETERANS DAY - MARCH 12, 2016
VIRGINIA WAR MEMORIAL
Yes, working dogs do indeed have their own VETERAN'S DAY Celebration. March 12, 2016 at the Virginia War Memorial, Working dogs of all varieties were honored for their work with our military, police, security, and search and rescue, as well as the now famous Therapy Canines. Your Hanover Hounds (all seen in their bright yellow shirts) were among the teams at the War Memorial.
We honor these members as everyday heroes, and wonder as to how these canines do what they do. Awesome displays and scenarios were run yesterday, all with positive results. Yes, we are proud of the working dogs now, and those who have sacrificed themselves in the defense of our country.

HANOVER HOUNDS ATTEND SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAMS
Hanover County Parks and Recreations do a summer program and have special speakers to teach the children about a variety of topics. The Hanover Hounds attended this 2014 year, their second year in a row. The county offers a variety of summer camps planned and lead by
seasonal staff counselors for elementary and middle school age children. In
addition, other department camp and program offerings are available online.
Camps offer children a fun, active, safe and supervised environment with planned activities like arts, crafts, sports, games, field trips, special visitors and more. Unless assistance is prearranged, children must be able to independently follow directions, exhibit age-appropriate social skills and function in a highly stimulating group environment.
In four days we went to South Anna Elementary, Cool Springs Elementary, Henry Clay Elementary (held at Liberty Middle), Laurel Meadows Elementary, Pole Green Elementary, and Kersey Creek Elementary. We educate the children about What is Hanover Hounds Search and Rescue and put an awareness of being loss and then play the cd Lost but Found Safe and Sound. We have the children put the fanny pack on and they demonstrate the plastic bad and whistle we answer questions and teach them about if they get lost in a store from their parents and how not to walk up to a dog and just pet it without asking the owner first and then Brian goes over a small training and the teachers gets to pick a child to hide with a counselor and then Rufus/Hobbes would go find them outside.
It is a great time and feeling to touch little ones. They range from k-6 grade. 560 campers.
